USING THE MANY-TO-MANY CAPABILITIES OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNICATION

Chapter

Abstract

  • This chapter explores the use of many-to-many communications made possible by decreasing communications costs and the evolution of social media. The Triple Aim is discussed in the context of patient empowerment, and the opportunity for patient empowerment through many-to-many networks on social media platforms is explored. Many-to-many communications strategies for organizations are looked at from two axes: hybrid/virtual organizations vs. virtual-only organizations; and private social media platforms vs. public social media platforms. The four possible strategies are demonstrated using real organizational examples. The chapter concludes that many-to-many communication is a powerful complementary tool for the promotion of public health and public health leaders should explore using these strategies.
