Tom Haines has reported in more than 35 countries and on five continents, on topics ranging from coal to cricket, art to revolution.
A former staff writer for The Boston Globe and The Seattle Times, Tom is the author of Walking to the Sun, published in October, 2018 by ForeEdge/UPNE. The book explores at ground level the scale of the fossil fuel industry in America and the emerging renewable, carbon-free fuels that may replace it. He has also written for The Washington Post, Orion Magazine, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Big Bend Sentinel, and elsewhere. He has three times been named Travel Journalist of the Year in North America, and his work has been anthologized in "The Best American Travel Writing" and "The Prentice Hall Reader."
At UNH, Tom teaches in the undergraduate Journalism Program, including digital reporting workshops and upper-level courses on investigative reporting and covering the environment in an era of climate change.
