Information Technology (IT) is a major that teaches students how to work with complex technologies and tackle challenging problems. Many of the industry jobs are best suited for IT graduates though they end up being filled by Computer Scientists (CS). Conversely, getting an IT degree would better suit many students’ career path but because of perception of IT being a weak major, they instead follow a path into CS. This paper describes how we successfully transformed our IT major, integrating it within other computing disciplines to not only optimize faculty resources but improve student experience. The resulting major not only strengthened student problem solving skills but helped to clearly define what place IT has within the broader computing field.
