Food insecurity prevalence among university students in New Hampshire

Academic Article

Abstract

  • This study examined the prevalence of food insecurity and associated factors among state university students. Participants (n= 943) completed an online questionnaire that combined the US Department of Agriculture 6-Item Short Form US Household Food Security Survey with demographic and food assistance use questions in fall, 2015. One-fourth of participants (25%) reported food insecurity within the past year. Students who received financial aid and identified as first generation were more likely to be food insecure. Food insecurity is a significant problem among university students. Additional research is needed to better understand and address food insecurity in higher education.
