Overview

  • Dr. Mike Ferrara is Dean of the College of Health and Human Services and the Kent P. Falb Professor of Kinesiology at the University of New Hampshire. Previously he served as the Associate Dean of Research at the University of Georgia. He received his doctorate degree from Penn State University, master's degree from Michigan State University and undergraduate degree from Ithaca College in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. Dean Ferrara is active in research and has published extensively in leading journals regarding sport-related concussion and exertional heat illness. He has received grants to support his research, the most recent to study environmental factors and the risk of exertional heat illness in interscholastic football players in Georgia that recently modified the pre-season acclimatization policy in the State. He has given numerous lectures around the world to include Japan, China, and Europe. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Research and Education Foundation Research Committee. Dean Ferrara served as the founding President of the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy. He has been involved in international sports as both a leader and clinician, including Director of Medical Operations for the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and Director of Medical Services for the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games. He also was the athletic trainer for the 1990 World Games, 1987 Pan American Games, 1985 Olympic Festival, 1983 World University Games and the 1982 National Sports Festival. Dean Ferrara has received numerous accolades for his research and leadership. He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame, Class of 2009, the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2012 and Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. Dean Ferrara was named a Fellow in the National Athletic Trainers Association in 2008 and in the National Academy of Kinesiology in 2003. Recently, Dr. Ferrara was named a 2010 Fulbright Scholar to Ireland where he taught in the athletic therapy program and researched sport-related concussion at Dublin City University, Ireland.
