Overview

  • Mark Wiley, Assistant Director, Marine Education for NH Sea Grant and UNH Cooperative Extension has spent his entire forty-three year career in education. Wiley utilized his biology, environmental science, marine science, and natural resources education as a classroom teacher at the high school level, as an educational assessment item writer and professional development provider, and as an informal educator. He has worked with audiences as diverse as youth, senior citizens, legislators, and educators. He has designed assessments, professional development programs, formal and informal education curricula, and communication pieces.

Wiley’s program management experience includes managing multi-million dollar assessment contracts, managing projects and staffing for a major division of an educational assessment company, directing and managing a volunteer marine education program, and as chair of a national network of marine educators.

Wiley’s grant experience includes participation in two NSF funded Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) grants, a NOAA Bay and Watershed Education Training (B-WET) grant, and as principal investigator on several foundation grants.

Currently Wiley trains new volunteers in marine science and informal education techniques for staffing for the national recognized UNH Marine Docent Program. He develops educational programs in marine science for the Docent Program, and continually evaluates the program for educational impact. He provides professional development in marine science and the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards for in-service formal and informal educators as part of the Science Literacy team of UNH Cooperative Extension. He is the lead faculty for a weeklong residential course in marine science for educators at the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a research and education partnership of UNH and Cornell University.
