Overview

  • Dr. Mike Stocz (St-Oates) is a scholar within sport law and sport media communications. In particular, Dr. Stocz research revolves around risk management in K-12 sport administrative settings, media research using qualitative methods, and motorsport studies. Dr. Stocz is currently the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Motorsport Culture & History (https://scholars.unh.edu/jmotorsportculturehistory/), as well as a member of the Argetsinger Symposium steering committee (conference on motorsport research), and an editorial board member for the International Journal of Business in Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management (https://www.gaics.org/journal/JBSM).

    Previously, Dr. Stocz worked within the farm systems for the Colorado Rockies (Albuquerque Isotopes) and the Boston Red Sox (Greenville Drive), as well as a social media producer, video editor, and sports photographer for a CBS affiliate in Spartanburg, SC (WSPA-TV), and freelance photographer/tech director/producer for a variety of networks, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, Charter Sports, Big South Network, UNCC 49ers Athletics, and ProView Sports (Albuquerque). Currently, Dr. Stocz does freelance media work for the Seacoast United Phantoms USL2, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Double A Affiliate- Toronto Blue Jays), and UNH athletics. As an avid sports fan, Dr. Stocz pulls for the San Diego Padres (ironic given previous farm system employment), Portland Timbers, Green Bay Packers, Boston Bruins, Chase Elliott, and Haas in Formula 1. Dr. Stocz is also a certified barbecue judge.

    Dr. Stocz's research has been featured in a number of different publications, including the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (JOPERD), The Physical Educator, the International Journal of Kinesiology in Higher Education, Soccer & Society, Mass Communication and Society, and the Journal of Sports Sciences. Previously, Dr. Stocz has mentored a University sponsored graduate student researcher of the year (Ryan Benner, UNA), been consulted on student athlete compensation in the NCAA outside of the NIL by a United States Senator, and is a certified peer reviewer for Quality Matters, an online course development guide.
