Lih-Hwa Yu was born in Hualien, Taiwan. After graduating from Taipei National University of the Arts with a B.F.A. degree in Lighting Design, he worked as a master electrician for theatre and taught lighting technology for many years at his alma mater. Lih-Hwa has designed numerous theater productions both in Taiwan and the United States. His design for an outdoor dance installation, The Shape of White, presented by Cohen New Work Festival in Austin, TX, was awarded the Best Lighting design from Austin Critics’ Table Award in 2009. Lih-Hwa’s lighting design for the opera, The Difficulty of Crossing a Field, which showcased his artistic style of lighting design as an art installation, was nominated for Best Lighting Design in Austin Critics’ Table Award in the following year. Lih-Hwa worked as a designer at Available Light. Inc, where he expended his lighting design carrier from theatre to architecture and exhibit design. He is the resident lighting designer for UNH Theatre and Dance main stage productions. He holds an M.F.A. in lighting design from the University of Texas at Austin.
