Overview

  • James Ramsay is a professor of security studies, coordinator of the Homeland Security program, and the founding Chair of the Department of Business, Politics and Security Studies at the University of New Hampshire. Prior to UNH, he created one of the first undergraduate programs in homeland security at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, where he also founded the department of Security Studies and International Affairs. He has over 20 years’ experience in public health, emergency management, occupational safety, environmental health and security studies.

    Dr. Ramsay currently serves as the New Hampshire InfraGard Vice President and on the Board for the International Association for Intelligence Education. He also serves as the current President for the International Society for Preparedness, Resilience and Security (INSPRS) of which he is a co-founder. Dr. Ramsay currently serves on the editorial review boards for Homeland Security Affairs Journal, the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. He also co-founded and serves on the editorial and advisory boards for the International Journal for Security, Preparedness and Resilience Education and the Journal of Human Security and Resilience.

    Previously, he was appointed by the US Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the Board of Scientific Counselors to the Director of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the CDC, where he served for 4 years. Ramsay now serves on the CDC/NIOSH Institutional Review Board as well as their Disaster Research IRB. Dr. Ramsay served 6 years on the Board of Directors for ABET, Inc., and 12 years as Chair of the Education Standards Committees for the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).

    His current area of research interests includes climate security, law enforcement education and the relationship between environmental and human security and national security strategic planning. Dr. Ramsay has served as a subject matter expert and grant reviewer on a wide range of health, safety, emergency management, and environmental health issues. Books include “Introduction to Homeland Security” and “Critical Issues in Homeland Security: A Casebook”, both by Routledge. A third text, “Foundations of Environmental Security: Concepts, Challenges and Case Studies” will be published by the American Meteorological Society in December 2019. His current text is “Homeland Security: Theory, Concepts and Cases” will also be published by Routledge and is expected spring/summer 2020.
