Ian Jones is a Research Assistant Professor in the Center for Acoustics Research and Education (CARE) at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS). His research focuses on underwater soundscape ecology, including quantifying trends of sounds present in natural habitats, how these sounds are detected and used by marine animals for ecological functions, and how soundscape data can inform assessments of overall habitat health. He is also interested in how marine noise pollution, such as from vessel traffic and marine construction, impacts the behavior and ecology of marine animals, especially fishes and invertebrates. Recently he his soundscape studies have expanded from strictly marine habitats to estuarine eelgrass and freshwater rivers in New Hampshire. Prior to his current Faculty position, he was a postdoc in CARE advised by Dr. Jennifer Miksis-Olds and studied long-term trends and oceanographic drivers of offshore soundscapes along the U.S. East coast. He is also a former president of the UNH Postdoctoral Association. Prior to UNH he obtained his PhD from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program working under Dr. Aran Mooney to research coral reef soundscapes and impacts of underwater construction noise on longfin squid behavior. Outside of research and teaching, he is a DJ obsessed with house and trance music, and enjoys video games, hiking, and scuba diving.
